Özet

Purpose: Multiple myeloma is a disease characterised by neoplastic plasma cells that synthesize abnormal monoclonal immunoglobulin. It has a severe clinical course and heterogeneous symptoms. Patients and method: In this study, 36 patients with multiple myeloma who were treated between January 1990 and September 1997 at the Department of Haematology-Oncology in Erciyes University Medical Faculty were reviewed retrospectively. Results: Of the patients; 61,1% was male, 38.9 percent female and their mean age was 59.78 ± 11,74 (31-80) years. On admission; 50 % of the patients was grade IIIA, while 27.8 % was grade IIIB. Pain was the primary symptom of 77.8 % of the patients. Renal failure, pathological bone fracture, lung infections, hypercalcemia and anemia were the most common complications. Fifteen of the 36 patients received palliative radiotherapy. The median follow up period was 17.5 (1-133) months. 72.2 % of the patients died during the follow up period. Conclusion: Poor prognosis may be due to the fact that most of the patients were admitted to hospital in high grade and already had had some complications. As a result, response to the therapy and survive rates were lower than those reported in the literature.
