Özet
Objective: We have investigated the prevalance of serum hepatitis B antigen in an obstetric patient population. Study design: Eight hundred and thirty-two patients visiting an obstetric department between June 1995 and May 1996 for antenatal care were investigated for the presence of hepatitis B surface antigen. Results: Seventy-four of 832 (8.9%) patients were hepatitis B surface antigen positive. Conclusion: Hepatitis B virus infection is an important disease which can lead to cirrhosis or petaocellular carcinoma. Vertical transmission from a carrier mother to the newborn can occur during delivery. The aim of an obstetrician is to find out hepatitis B virus carrier mothers before delivery in order to protect the newborn by active and passive immunization immediately after delivery. The prevalance of 8.9% in our hospital population shows the importance of the carrier state.
