Surgical treatment approaches to the colorectal cancers in the light of the current guidelines

Özet
Colorectal cancers are the third most frequently diagnosed cancer all over the world. Some of the colon cancers arise from malignant colon polyps, some not. The malignant polyps can be either pedunculated or sessile, and their classifications (Haggitt and Kudo classifications) for cancer invasion are different. Malignant polyps can be treated either endoscopically or surgically, depending on their depth of invasion. Colorectal cancers are preoperatively staged on radiological findings, and treatment approach can show difference, especially for rectal cancers and locally advanced colon cancers. Based on preoperative radiological and postoperative pathological staging, neoadjuvant chemo-or radiotherapy, or both, before and systemic therapy after the surgery might be needed. Pathological staging of the colorectal tumors is commonly done using the TNM classification, and postoperative treatment or follow-up decision is based on this classification. Different treatment approaches have been developed, and guidelines have been ever changed year to year. Here the treatment of the malignant polyps in the light of malignant polyp classifications and preoperative radiological and pathological stage-based surgical treatment approaches to the colorectal cancers were given in the light of current treatment guidelines.
