Özet

Objective: In parallel with the increase in diabetes mellitus in the world, diabetes-related secondary complications have become a global health problem. Among these, one of the most significant is diabetic neuropathy. When mechanism-based and symptomatic conventional treatments of diabetic neuropathy are examined, it is known that patients suffering from this condition do not yet have adequate treatment. In the current situation, it is seen that the search for new drugs is important. In this study, it was aimed to review the role of natural resources in the treatment of diabetic neuropathy on the basis of extracts and secondary compounds. Result and Discussion: Natural products are important for the development of new agents in the treatment of diabetes and its complications. In a comprehensive literature review, it has been observed that phenolic bioactive metabolites, especially flavonoids, provide effective results. Literature data reveals the importance of the relationship between phenolic metabolites and antioxidant mechanisms. Species containing phenolic-rich secondary metabolites identified as a result of preclinical and clinical studies for the treatment of diabetic neuropathy are widely distributed in Türkiye. It is thought that the taxa in the Flora of Türkiye will constitute a good resource for pharmaceutical research and development studies in this field.
