Özet

Mitochondria are the most important components in the energy metabolism of the cell. They are membrane-bound organelles, having extraordinarily two different membranes. In addition to energy adenosine triphosphate production through the process of cellular respiration, mitochondria are involved in the production of reactive oxygen species, redox molecules and their metabolites, cell signaling regulation, cell death, and biosynthetic metabolism. The mitochondria regulate the metabolism of the cell, store calcium, contribute to apoptosis and thermogenesis, and form a dynamic, interconnected network with other cellular compartments. Mitochondrial functions extend beyond the boundaries of cells and influence the physiology of organisms via controlling cell-to-cell communication. Mitochondrial dysfunction has emerged as a significant factor in a wide range of complex diseases, including neurodegenerative and metabolic disorders. In this chapter, we will go through the role that mitochondria play in cellular metabolism.
