Özet

Isolation, identification and determination of antibiotic susceptibilities of anaerobic rods from patients with rapidly progressive periodontitis was performed. A total of 32 patients were diagnosed according to the criteria of Page and Schroder and found to have rapidly progressive periodontitis. The microbial samples were collected from 12 males and 20 females whose ages ranged between 16 and 36 (mean: 27). These patients had not received any antibiotic therapy during the previous 10 days before sampling, and the samples were taken with sterile curettes from the base of the periodontal pockets. Totally, 25 anaerobic bacteria were isolated and identified from their periodontal pockets, and the pattern was as Actinobacillus actinomycetemcomitans (2/25), Actinomyces israelii (1/25), Actinomyces naeslundii (2/25), Actinomyces viscosus (1/25), Bifidobacterium spp. (1/25), Eikenella corrodens (1/25), Fusobacterium nucleatum (8/25), Peptostreptococcus spp.(2/25), porphyromonas gingivalis (6/25), and Veillonella parvula (1/25). The antibiotics which had the highest percentages of susceptible strains were ticarcilline (25/25), imipenem (25/25) and vancomycin (25/25), whereas tetracycline (17/25) and penicillin (17/25) were the antibiotics with the lowest percentage of susceptibility. Antibiotic susceptibility testing should be done with more clinical species to determine the drug of choice, and clinical trials will be required to confirm the efficiency of these agents in such conditions.
