Özet
The circadian clock is a system of molecular and physiological rhythms that regulate various biological functions over a 24-hour cycle. The circadian clock is found in the central nervous system and also in peripheral tissues, including the gastrointestinal system and accessory organs. The circadian clock coordinates digestive processes such as mobility, secretion, absorption, hormone release, barrier function, and microbiota composition in response to environmental signals such as light and food intake. Disruption of the circadian clock due to genetic mutations, sleep disorders, shift work, or jet lag can disrupt the normal functioning of the gastrointestinal system and increase the risk of various diseases, such as irritable bowel syndrome, gastroesophageal reflux disease, peptic ulcer disease, inflammatory bowel disease, and gastrointestinal cancers. Furthermore, as our understanding of the role of the circadian clock in the regulation of gastrointestinal physiology and pathophysiology increases and as our ability to regulate the circadian clock increases, it is evident that a new field will open in the future for the treatment of gastrointestinal diseases. In this chapter, the relationship between the circadian clock and the gastrointestinal system will be discussed in the literature.
