Özet

Nesfatin-1, N-terminal fragment of nucleobindin 2 (NUCB2) protein, is a neuropeptide distributed broadly in central and peripheral tissues with pleiotropic functions. Besides its well-known anorexigenic effect, nesfatin-1 acts as inhibitory in gastrointestinal motility, regulatory in metabolic, endocrine, cardiac, and reproductive functions, implicated in thermogenesis, sleep-wake regulation, and emotion regulation. In search of an explanation for the underlying pathophysiology of neurovegetative symptoms of depression, nesfatin-1 took the attention of the researchers with its distribution, functions, and coexpression with several other neurotransmitters involved in feeding, neuroendocrine, homeostatic, and stress-related functions. There is mounting evidence on the role of nesfatin-1 in psychiatric disorders like depression and anxiety. In this chapter, we will present the structure and distribution of nesfatin-1 and focus on the studies about its involvement in depression.
