The Effects of Adverse Childhood Experiences and Early Maladaptive Schemas on Relationship Obsessive–Compulsive Disorder

Relationship obsessive–compulsive disorder (ROCD) is a specific form of obsessive–compulsive disorder (OCD) with symptoms manifesting in romantic relationships in two distinct ways: relationship- and partner-focused its obsessions, on one hand, and compulsions to eliminate the stress associated. Although these are two important variables that can have to understand relationship problems, there are few studies investigating them. The present study aimed to investigate the association between adverse childhood experiences and intimate relationships (e.g., ROCD and PROCS, with the mediator role of early maladaptive schemas). Early maladaptive schema is a persistent self-defeating or destructive pattern of memories, emotions, and physical sensations, formed during childhood and taking the shape of a belief about oneself or the world. Three hundred and nine undergraduate students (235 female, 74 male; 21.40 mean age) participated in the study. The model proposed by the current investigation was tested using structural equation modeling with LISREL 8.80. The results provided support for the mediator role of early maladaptive schemas (EMS) in the relationship between early childhood experiences and intimate relationship problems. In addition, EMS has been shown to mediate the relationship between negative childhood experiences and ROCD and PROCS. Although these results should be interpreted with caution, they contribute to a better understanding of ROCD and PROCS.
