Özet

Carbon monoxide (CO) is the most common poisonous gas known, which is a colorless, odorless gas produced by the combustion of organic materials. Symptoms of CO poisoning spread over a large scale. Imaging plays an important role in the diagnosis of CO poisoning with the onset of symptoms. There may be acute or chronic poisoning, and the imaging findings vary accordingly. In addition, imaging methods can objectively and quantitatively evaluate nervous system damage after CO poisoning, evaluate the prognosis of the disease, and evaluate the delayed onset of encephalopathy. Imaging studies, particularly cerebral magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), have high sensitivity but low specificity for detecting brain abnormalities after CO poisoning. Involvement of both the globus pallidus in both the modalities of Computed Tomography (CT) and MRI is typical. In addition, deep white cell involvement is a more suggestive indicator. In the presence of pulmonary symptoms, the first examination is a chest X-ray. In a poor prognosis, a Thorax CT scan is required to demonstrate the damage and spread of the disease in the lungs. Nevertheless, a correlation of imaging studies with clinical history and laboratory data is crucial to perform the correct diagnosis. The importance of imaging in CO poisoning and its findings are summarized.
