The Knowledge and Awareness Levels of the Nurses Working in a University Hospital About Disaster Üniversite Hastanesinde Çalışan Hemşirelerin Afet Konusundaki Bilgi ve Bilinç Düzeyleri

Özet
The aim of this study was to evaluate the knowledge and awareness levels of nurses working in a university hospital about disaster. This descriptive study was conducted with nurses working in a university hospital between February and March 2019. The population of the study consisted of 600 nurses working in this hospital between the specified dates and the sample consisted of 200 nurses. Data of the study were collected using a questionnaire with 38 questions. The mean age of the nurses was 31.93±5.14 (22-45). 86.0% (the highest rate) of the participants stated that earthquake was the first thing coming to mind when they heard the expression disaster. It was determined that 41.5% of the nurses received training on disaster. It was found that there was a statistically significant difference between whether the nurses have received training or not about disasters, experiencing a disaster before, regulating their losses after a disaster, having an emergency bag at home, being a member of a non-governmental organization related to the disaster, knowing whether the city they live in is or not at risk for earthquakes, preparing a disaster plan of the hospital where they work, and the state of knowing whether disaster-related drills were carried out or not (p<0.05). In our study, it was determined that the nurses who were educated about disasters exhibited more conscious behaviors about the disaster both professionally and individually. In addition, we have determined that nurses have a moderate level of sufficient knowledge and awareness about disasters.
