Embedded Participants in Simulation-Based Disaster Education: Experiences of Nursing Students

Özet
Background: Simulation-based experiences provide students with a safe learning environment. This study aimed to explore the feelings, emotions, and experiences of embedded participants playing the role of victims in a disaster scenario. Method: This descriptive study, which utilized a qualitative research design, was conducted with 20 third-year students who were enrolled in the nursing school of a university in the 2014 Fall and 2015 Spring terms. Data collected by focus group interviews were analyzed using Malterud's systematic text condensation method. Results: Based on the experiences of embedded participants in their simulation-based roles, three main themes, “initial reactions,” “adaptation,” and “inference”, and six subthemes were identified. Conclusions: The learning experience of the nursing students as embedded participants evolved from feelings of anxiety and excitement to the recognition that simulation-based learning is instructive and beneficial for raising awareness.
