Özet
Objective: This study is planned to estimate the incidence of physical diseases in an inpatient psychiatry unit. The distribution of physical illnesses in mental disorders and their effect on the length of hospitalization are also estimated. Method: This study is performed retrospectively by revising 240 patients' charts; who were hospitalized in Ankara Numune Hospital 1st Psychiatry Clinic. Findings: The DSM -IV diagnose criteria are used to determine the illnesses. The distribution of the psychiatric diagnoses in our sample was as follows: 40% schizophrenia or other psychotic disorders, 25.4% mood disorders, 11.6% alcohol absence syndrome, and 8.7% of were anxiety disorders. Thirty-eight percent of all patients who were hospitalized because of mental disorders had one or more physical illnesses effecting one or more systems. Twenty-eight percent of patients had physical complaints during their hospitalization, and 66.1% of whom had a confirmed physical illness, however existence of physical illness did not change hospitalization length. Discussion and Conclusion: Like previous studies, in our sample, prevalence of physical illnesses in mentally disordered inpatients was particularly high. These results indicate the importance of approaching to psychiatry patients who have physical complaint or previous physical illness history in a holistic treatment since they have high incidence of physical illness.
