Özet
Fibromyalgia syndrome (FMS) is a soft tissue rheumatism with an unknown etiology, characterised by diffuse, chronic musculoskeletal pain and tender points. Besides chronic pain, the coexistence of insomnia, anxiety, irritability and exhaustion bring to mind that it is a psychosomatic disorder. This study was constructed to describe the personality characteristics of women with FMS and the effects of social and economic variables and duration of illness on those features. Thirty FMS outpatients and 30 healthy women with similar demographic variables were included to the study. The personality profile of the participants was determined by Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory (MMPI). The comparison of MMPI scores of the patient and control groups indicated that 6 of 10 subscales (Hs, Hy, D, Pa, Pt and Sc) were significantly higher in the than those of control group. Assessing the effects of demographic variables by ANOVA showed us that demographic factors, economic factors and duration of illness had no effect on MMPI scores. In conclusion , women patients with FMS have different personality characteristics than in normal female population. However, this personality profile of patients with FMS is far to be distinctive.
