Özet
Hearing loss (HL) is the most prevalent congenital disorder detected as a result of neonatal secreening affecting 1-3 in 1000 live births, and associated with difficulties in verbal and nonverbal communication ability, behavioral disorders, poor psychosocial health, and lower academic achievement when not detected on time. On the other hand, early detection and intervention, especially in the first six months of life, have beneficial effects on language, behavioral, cognitive, and academic outcomes. Therefore, it is essential that all newborns be screened for HL within the first month, that newborns who do not succeed hearing screening tests be evaluated by an experienced audiologist in terms of HL within the first three months, and that newborns whose diagnosis of HL is confirmed must receive the necessary interventions within the first six months to achieve maximum beneficial effects. It is essential to emphasize that the rate of HL increases by two-fold between birth and school age, therefore ongoing surveillance for HL is essential throughout childhood
