Is advanced maternal age an actual obstetric risk factor? Ileri maternal yas gercekten obstetrik bir risk faktoru mudur?

Özet
Objective: To determine the obstetric prognosis of pregnancies with advanced maternal age. Study Design: One hundred ninety seven patients, older than 40 years of age, who delivered in Dr. Zekai Tahir Burak Women's Hospital in 1995, were compared with the control group which consisted of 197 women with an age between 20-30 years with matched parities. Results: The incidence of hypertension was higher in the study group compared to controls (11.68 %; 2.34 % respectively, p<0.01). While the incidence of cesarean section was 40.10 % in the study group, it was 20.40 % in the control group (p<0.01). The most common indication for cesarean section was previous cesarean section. More babies in the study group required intensive care in the neonatal period compared to controls (33.69 %; 20.72 % respectively, p<0.05). Conclusion: Pathologic conditions related to aging are encountered more in older pregnant women and babies of this group of mothers require more care in the neonatal period. However, there was not an increase in the risk of other parameters that were evaluated.
