The Effect of Education Given to Hemodialysis Patients on Independence and Self-Care: A Randomized Controlled Trial

Özet
Objective: This randomized controlled trial aimed to determine the effects of training based on the Roper-Logan-Tierney Nursing Model on the independence levels and self-care agency of individuals receiving hemodialysis treatment in their daily living activities. Methods: The study was conducted with 78 patients (40 in the experimental group, 38 in the control group) at a hemodialysis unit in Türkiye. The experimental group received a 6-week Roper-Logan-Tierney Nursing Model-based training program, while the control group received routine care. Data were collected using the Patient Information Form, the Modified Barthel Index, and the Self-Care Agency Scale at baseline, post-intervention, and at the 3-month follow-up. Results: The experimental group had significantly higher Modified Barthel Index and Self-Care Agency Scale scores compared to the control group at post-intervention and follow-up (P<.05). Within-group comparisons revealed significant improvements in Modified Barthel Index and Self-Care Agency Scale scores from baseline to post-intervention and follow-up in the experimental group (P<.05). In contrast, no significant changes were observed in the control group. Conclusion: Training based on the Roper-Logan-Tierney Nursing Model can effectively increase the independence levels and self-care agency of individuals receiving hemodialysis treatment in their daily living activities. This study highlights the importance of incorporating nursing models in patient education to promote independence and self-care among hemodialysis patients.
