Özet
Pericardium is a unique structure that surrounds the heart and serves several important physiological functional roles. This chapter presented the normal gross anatomy and embryology of the human pericardium in detail that allows easy correlation with clinical application. The anatomical structures of the pericardium are discussed, including its ligaments and attachments to the great vessels of the heart. Formation of the oblique and transverse sinuses and their clinical significance are also emphasized. The embryological developmental milestones of the pericardium explained and illustrated. The differences between the cellular structures of the parietal pericardium and visceral pericardium (epicardium) are briefly discussed to ease understanding of the adaptation of the pericardium to diverse pathologic processes.
