Özet

The risk of developing serious neonatal infections in children born to mothers with vaginal and/or anorectal colonization of Group B Streptococcus (GBS) is high. Five hundred pregnant women divided into two groups and 221 babies born vaginally to them were evaluated to study the frequency of the GBS carrier state in the gravids, to evaluate the risk of contamination of the newborn and to determine the efficiency of oral ampicillin in the prevention of the carrier state in the gravids as well as to determine the efficiency of the use of single-dose penicillin G prophylactically in the newborns. The incidence of vaginal GBS carrier state in the gravids was found to be 7.0-8.5%. Contamination of the newborns occurred 58.3% of the time. The success rate of oral ampicillin use in vaginal GBS carrier gravids was 87.5%. In babies born to mothers with positive pre-labor cultures, the efficiency of single-dose penicillin G was 100 percent.
