Özet
Introduction Materials and Methods Results Conclusion Epilepsy is a common neurological disease in childhood and requires antiepileptic drug therapy. The negative effects of various antiepileptic drugs on vitamin D metabolism are known. In this study, it was planned to investigate the effects of valproate and levetiracetam drugs, which are frequently used in children with epilepsy, on 25 OH vitamin D levels. A total of 181 children with the diagnosis of epilepsy receiving levetiracetam, valproate and levetiracetam+valproate treatment and 233 healthy control groups were included in the study. 25 OH vitamin D and calcium levels of both groups were compared. In our study, 25 OH vitamin D and calcium levels of children receiving antiepileptic treatment were found to be statistically significantly lower than healthy children (p=0.001; p=0.001). Comparison of vitamin D and calcium levels of epileptic children treated with valproate, levetiracetam and valproate +levetiracetam did not significantly differ (p=0.305; p=0.772). Regardless of the type of antiepileptic drug taken by children with epilepsy, 25 OH vitamin D and calcium levels were found to be low. In the follow up of children under antiepileptic treatment, measurement of vitamin D and calcium levels and treatment in case of low levels are of great importance for the development of children in the growing age.
