Effects of vaginal misoprostol and dinoproston application to terminate second trimester pregnancy

Özet
To investigate the effects of vaginal misoprostol and dinoproston (prostaglandin E2) gel on cervical ripening and on the induction of second trimester abortion. Dinoproston gel was applicated to vaginally to 14 women, while other 33 women received vaginal misoprostol to induce second trimester abortion. The gestational ages ranged from 13 to 20 weeks. These women were counseled for medical abortion by prostaglandins due to diagnosed fetal anomaly. Setting: Zeynep Kamil Women and Children's Hospital, Istanbul, Turkey. There was no statistically significant difference between the two groups concerning women's age, gravidity, parity, gestational age, the time required to terminate the pregnancy, amount of bleeding, complications and side effects of drugs. The cost of treatment with misoprostol was lower than treatment with dinoproston. The use of either vaginal misoprostol or dinoproston gel application makes no difference for the purpose of second trimester pregnancy termination. Both treatments were equally effective. The cost of treatment, which is an important factor for the choice of the drug especially in developing countries, is lower with misoprostol treatment.
