Özet
Aim: The widespread use of ultrasonography has led to a relative increase in the incidence of neonatal ovarian cysts. The incidence is 34 % with an equivalent presentation on either side and rare bilaterality increased secretion of maternal hormones are accused for the aetiology of ovarian cysts. Ovarian cysts are usually asymptomatic except for the larger cysts which may be complicated by torsion, hemorrhage sometimes leading to clinical symptoms such as intestinal obstruction and respiratory distress. Choice of therapy in neonatal ovarian cysts depends on the diameter of the cyst. Cysts less than 4 cm diameter should be treated conservatively, while surgical treatment is recommended in the larger cysts due to the risk of complications. Patients and Method: In this study eight ovarian cysts cases encountered in the last five years were evaluated retrospectively. Results: Among the 8 ovarian cyst cases that were evaluated four cysts were located in the right, three on the left and one was bilateral. Five of the cysts were detected prenatally with a mean diagnosis age of gestational weeks. Among five cysts that developed complications, torsion was noted in three, intestinal obstruction in one and respiratory distress in another case. Only one case was followed-up conservatively and was found to regress spontaneously. Surgery was performed in 7 cases. Conclusion: Prenatally diagnosed ovarian cysts should be carefully evaluated regarding size, structure and possible complications and treatment should be planned accordingly.
