Özet

There is an important increase in the incidence of diabetes worldwide. It is known that diabetes is caused by oxidative stress. Diabetes is a metabolic disorder characterized by absolute or relative deficiencies in insulin secretion and/or insulin action associated with chronic hyperglycemia. Hyperglycemia, which is present in diabetes, causes the formation of free radicals as a result of the autoxidation of glucose. Antioxidants can reverse the undesirable effects of free radicals by means of many mechanisms. Most medicinal plants contain various antioxidant phytochemical compounds. Today, there is increasing interest in using natural antioxidants instead of synthetic antioxidants. Monoterpenes are the major compounds of plants. Limonene, found in various Citrus plants, is one of the important compounds in monoterpenes. Among all kinds of natural compounds, triterpenoids contain a large family of bioactive compounds. Ursolic acid is one of the important pentacyclic triterpenoids, and is commonly found in the human diet. Studies have suggested that ursolic acid could be used as a protective and/or therapeutic agent for diabetes. It has been commonly used in Chinese folk medicine for a long time. This chapter mainly focuses on the effects of limonene and ursolic acid against diabetes via its antioxidant properties.
