Özet
Infections are the most important cause of mortality in cancer patients. Neutropenia is a leading cause that increases the risk of infection. In neutropenic patients diagnosis and treatment strategies are different from other infectious diseases. Occasionally, neither physical nor laboratory examination may indicate any evidence related to the cause. Once neutropenic fever is determined, it is necessary to start empirical antibiotic therapy since pseudomonas infections are more dangerous in these patients. Empirical therapy guidelines have been determined by European Organisation for Research and Treatment of Cancer (EORTC) and Infectious Disease Society of America (IDSA). Despite these effective guidelines, empirical therapy must be determined according to the microbiologic data of each center. In this review, management of neutropenic patients with cancer and the principles of empirical antimicrobial therapy are evaluated.
