Özet
Objective: There is close relation and interaction between the skin and the nervous system. Personality traits are important for this relation and interaction. The results of the studies investigated the impact of personality on skin disorders are controversial. This controversy can also be observed between alexithymia, which is an extension of personality, and anger-anger expression style. To overcome this controversy, a personality model such as Cloninger's psychobiological model of personality which examines personality multi-dimensionally and ensures to set a relation with the biological structure must be taken as the basis. In this study, we aimed to investigate the personality profile of dermatological patients with psoriasis and alopecia areata (AA) on the basis of this personality model. Material and Methods: We recruited patients with psoriasis (n= 30) and AA (n= 26) as well as healthy subjects (n= 29) from the Dermatology Clinics. All subjects were men (age= 20-30 years old). Groups were similar to each other in respect of sociodemographic characteristics (p> 0.05). They were asked to complete the Temperament and Character Inventory, the Toronto Alexithymia Scale and the Spielberger's State Trait Anger Scale. Results: We found no significant differences among the temperament-character dimensions, alexithymia and anger-anger management style of the groups. Despite the lack of any difference among the groups, 30% of the patients with psoriasis, 34.6% of the patients with AA and 24.1% of controls were alexithymic. Conclusion: Unlike the literature, the temperament-character profile and alexithymia and anger-anger expression styles of adult male psoriasis and AA patients were found to be identical with the normal population. These results show that there is no difference between the personality profiles of psoriasis and AA patients. Further studies should be conducted with broader sampling groups covering females.
