Özet
Purpose: We aimed to evaluate thirty six patients who were diagnosed as having hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) in Erciyes University Medical Faculty Department of Oncology between 1986 and 1997. Material and methods: Age, sex, number of hepatic masses, existence of underlying hepatic cirrhosis, serological test of hepatitis, alfa-fetoprotein levels, existence of metastases, therapeutic outcome, survival time, and last condition of the patients were evaluated, retrospectively. Results: Of our patients, 25 were male and 11 were female. Age distribution was between 17 and 74 years (56.8±14.1). In twenty-six patients (%72), contact with hepatitis viruses was observed. In 25 of the patients AFP levels were determined. AFP levels were normal and near to normal in nine (36%), elevated in 14 (%56), and higher than 1000 IU/ml in two (%8) patients. Supportive therapy was given to 18 patients whose performance status according to ECOG was ≥3; 15 out of 18 patients, whose performance status according to ECOG was <3, received chemotherapy only; surgical resection and chemotherapy were given to the other 3 patients. Complete response was obtained in two patients who had surgical resection plus chemotherapy. Survival was observed longer in patients given chemotherapy than patients not given chemotherapy. There was no significant difference in survival between patients given epirubicin containing regimens and those not given epirubicin. Conclusion: Overall survival of our cases was found to be shorter when compared to the literature. We suppose that survival of our patients is short because in our country hepatocellular carcinoma cases are frequently associated with hepatitis B virus infection and they apply to the oncology centres at a late stage.
