Özet

Skin tests are important in the diagnosis of allergic diseases. The skin prick test is used in immediate, type 1, IgE-mediated allergic reactions. If the medical history and physical examination show type 1 hypersensitivity, skin prick tests are indicated to identify the presence of specific IgE to relevant causative allergens: aeroallergens, foods, certain drugs, and insect venoms. A positive skin test result shows allergic sensitization, but it does not verify definitive clinical sensitivity to an allergen. Intradermal tests are usually used in the patient with a negative skin prick test but a convincing history of IgE-mediated hypersensitivity. It is preferred in the diagnosis of drug and hymenoptera venom allergies. It may be used for drug allergies such as B-lactams, anesthetics, proton pump inhibitors, insulin, enzymes, opiates, and neuromuscular relaxants. In addition to IgE-mediated hypersensitivity, it may also be used for delayed-type hypersensitivity based on reading time. The patch test is the gold standard and important diagnostic method to determine type 4, delayed-type hypersensitivity. It is preferred to identify the causative agent in allergic contact dermatitis and delayed-type drug eruption.
