Özet
Spontaneous iliac vein rupture is a rare cause of retroperitoneal hemorrhage. It is a vascular emergency with no clear precipitating factors, and with high mortality. A 56-year-old woman was admitted to our emergency service with history of left lower abdominal and left leg pain which occurred suddenly without trauma. She had echimosis in various regions of her left leg. Shortly thereafter, she collapsed in the emergency service. A computed tomographic image of the abdomen revealed a retroperitoneal hematoma in the left lower abdominal region. A rupture on the posteromedial surface of the left iliac vein was discovered during an emergency laparotomy. Primary repair of the vein was attempted but proved impossible due to friable nature of the vessel wall. The common iliac vein was ligated and the haematoma evacuated. The patient died from uncontrolable hemorrhage due to coagulopathy 4 hours after the operation postoperatively. The present case is the first published case from Turkey according to our review of the literature. Copyright © 2010 by Türkiye Klinikleri.
