Özet
The aim of this preliminary study was to evaluate the diagnostic capability of endoscopic ultrasonography (EUS) in the detection of mediastinal lymph node metastasis. Twenty-five consecutive patients with lung cancer were included in the study and all patients underwent preoperative transesophageal EUS and computed tomography (CT) examinations on mediastinal lymph nodes. EUS findings were compared with those of CT. EUS was performed by one examiner who was unaware of the results of the other imaging methods, with the Olympus instrument GF-UM20 which has a radial scanner with 7.5 and 12 MHz. The location, number and size of the lymph nodes Were recorded. Eighty-five mediastinal lymph nodes were viewed by EUS, of which 36 Were less than 10 mm and 48 were more than 10 mm in diameter. Seventy-four lymph nodes were shown by CT. The results were assessed according to six lymph node sites. CT was found to be superior to EUS in detecting upper mediastinal lymph nodes while EUS was found to be superior to CT in detecting right and left tracheobronchial, subaortic, hilar and paraesophageal lymph nodes. Given this advantageous may be helpful in the diagnosis of N2 metastasis. We conclude that EUS can show mediastinal lymph nodes, apart from pre, paratracheal nodes and may be considered as a complementary modality to CT in the assessment of mediastinal lymph nodes.
