Özet

Water is a valuable and essential resource for the food and agricultural industries. Since water is used for various purposes, such as cooling, washing, disinfection, steam, and irrigation, it directly affects the quality and properties of food products. Water management approaches should be investigated, and legislative measurements should be followed. Drinking water’s chemical qualities and sensory properties, such as taste, odor, and appearance, are also important parameters. Fungi, other microorganisms, and chemicals produce many compounds that negatively impact the taste and odor of drinking water. Furthermore, radiopharmaceutical and medical waste have also posed a risk for radionuclide contamination of soil and water, which may also affect plants and aquatic and agricultural food products. In this sense, water and wastewater treatment facilities should give more attention to removing biological, chemical, or radionuclides-based contaminants to upgrade water quality for safety. Recent studies have shown that nonthermal technologies such as radiation, corona discharge plasma, and nanotechnology applications are promising methods for the inactivation of emerging viruses and chemical contaminants (e.g., antibiotics, pesticides) in water sources. Considering these statements, this chapter discusses recent preventive measurements for sustainable water management, taste/odor aspects, radiopharmaceuticals, radiotoxic natural isotopes risk in water, and alternative nonthermal technologies with synergistic applications.
