Özet

The mechanic ventilation support is usually required for a short period in the surgical critical care units. It is important to provide effective sedation for the patient supported by ventilator, and to cease the sedation for getting the patient awake when the support is not required any more. The two short acting sedatives, propofol and midazolam, were used for twentyfive patients during ventilatory support for 24 hours in Critical Care Unit of the Department of General Surgery, Gulhane Military Medical Academy and the results were compared. For statistical analysis, means, variance analysis and Mann Whitney U tests were used and p<0.05 was accepted as statistically significant. While the required sedation was maintained by both medicine, much more dose adaptation was needed for midazolam group (U= 117, p<0.05). After ceasing the sedative medicine infusion, the right responding time period for verbal commands was significantly short for propofol group (U= 132, p<0.05). Propofol is especially seemed to be an alternative choice that can be used with great confidence for patient required short period ventilator support in surgical critical care unit.
