Özet
Diabetes is a chronic disease characterized by elevated levels of blood glucose, which may cause damage to many organs over time. The number of people affected and killed by diabetes has increased dramatically over the past few decades. So, it is critical to diagnose diabetes early, treat it appropriately, and, most importantly, prevent risk factors. Smoking is addictive that threatens public health and is one of those risk factors that affect diabetes in many ways. It increases the risk of developing diabetes. Moreover, in individuals with diabetes, blood sugar levels increase with smoking, and blood sugar regulation is impaired. Even in patients who are not diagnosed with diabetes, blood glucose values may be higher in smokers than in nonsmokers. As the disease progresses, diabetes leads to some vascular complications and they are also worsened by smoking. On the other hand, smoking cessation will reverse the negative effects of smoking on the course of diabetes over time, and will reverse the risk of diabetes in healthy individuals.
