Özet

Oncogenes encode proteins that ordinarily participate in stimulatory growth pathways in normal cells. Amplification, translocation, or mutation of these genes has been shown to facilitate malignant transformation by increasing the ability of cells to proliferate in an unrestrained fashion. Several classes of oncogene products are involved in transmitting stimulatory growth signals from the periphery of the cell toward the nucleus. Most oncogenes are mutated forms of normal genes, called proto-oncogenes, which are involved in the control of cell proliferation and differentation. If an oncogene is altered or overexpressed, either as a result of a mutation in the gene itself or by altered external control, the cell in which the change occurred can undergo uncontrolled growth, eventually becoming malignant. Oncogenes can be classfied according to their cellular location and the function of their encoded oncoproteins in the signal transduction pathway.
