Objective: The aim of this study was to determine the factors influencing the diagnosis of larynx cancer with regard to the patient, the tumor and the physician as well as to clarify the early, late and average diagnostic period terminologies. Material and Methods: The study was conducted by interviews and retrospective chart reviews of 40 larynx cancer patients who were still under treatment or in the follow up period. The time from the onset of first symptoms to the first doctor visit and to the initiation of treatment was determined and the impact of sociodemographic factors on the time interval was examined. Results: The average time from the onset of first symptoms to the first doctor visit was 111 days (5-540) and from the first doctor visit to the initiation of treatment was 69 days (10- 480 days). Having a college degree and being in the high-income group were significant factors decreasing the diagnostic periods. The inhabitance of the patient had no significant effect on the diagnostic period. Similarly, the stage of the tumor had no significant effect on the time from the onset of symptoms to the first doctor visit. The regulations of the government, the responsibilities and the sanctions of doctors in cancer diagnosis were also discussed. Conclusion: In addition to the responsibilities of physicians, increasing public awareness regarding the symptoms of larynx cancer has a major role in the diagnosis.
