Özet

Acute onset or recurrent pleural effusions are common in emergency departments. It may be completely asymptomatic, or it may present with life-threatening severe clinical manifestations. Thoracentesis is performed in the diagnosis and treatment of pleural effusion. It is done diagnostically and therapeutically. Diagnostic thoracentesis is mostly used to differentiate transudate and exudate in emergency services, while therapeutic thoracentesis is used more frequently in patients with severe dyspnea. Thoracentesis applications can be done more comfortably and effectively in proportion to technological developments over the years. In effusions requiring thoracentesis, the complication rate can be significantly reduced when combined with ultrasound. The use of ultrasonography and other radiological imaging during thoracentesis helps to reduce the complication rate and increase the success of the physician. The use of devices such as pleural manometry, which has increased in recent years, may contribute to the formation of different treatment algorithms for the coming years.
