Özet

Objective: The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of aerobic exercise on blood pressure (BP) in normotensive (NT) and hypertensive (HT) older patients. Material and Methods: Fifteen HT patients (Group 1) and 9 NT women (Group 2) were included in exercise training. Eleven HT patients (Group 3) and 5 NT women (Group 4) were included as a control group. All patients completed symptom-limited submaximal exercise test on treadmill. Group 1 and group 2 exercised 2 times a week and the duration of training was 50 minute. The BP was examined at the beginning and after 4 and 8 weeks of exercise training. Health related quality of life and psychological status of the subjects were evaluated using Short form-36 (SF-36) and Beck Depression Inventory (BDI). Results: There were significant decrease in SBP levels of group 1 and group 2 after first and second months (p<0,05, p<0,05 respectively) and DBP levels (p<0,05, p<0,05 respectively). There were significant decrease in BDI scores and significant improvement in SF-36 scores of exercise group after 2 months (p<0,05, p<0,01 respectively). Conclusion: We have shown that regular aerobic exercise has a beneficial effect on BP so it can be recommended to reduce high BP and the cardiovascular risks.
