Prophylactic surgical applications in chest surgery are relatively new by definition, but some practical applications are quite old. As the morbidity and mortality of an elective surgical procedure are always lower than those of emergency surgery, thoracic surgeons have been using this surgery option for many years in bulla or tuberculosis sequelae with the potential to become complicated. The present study comprises examples of prophylactic chest surgery described in the literature. Benign causes for prophylactic chest surgery are pneumothorax, giant bulla, tuberculosis sequelae, pulmonary arteriovenous malformations, sequestration, and diaphragmatic paralysis. Some chest wall tumors, pleural tumors, and congenital lung malformations carry the risk of malignancy and also require prophylactic chest surgery. With today's knowledge, hereditary lung cancer is not suitable for prophylactic surgery for reasons such as the lung being a vital organ, a very small genetic predisposition in the tumor's etiology, and not knowing in which part of the lung the tumor may develop, even if it is predicted. However, with the development of anesthesia and surgical techniques, examples, and areas of application for prophylactic surgery are expected to increase.
