Özet

This study aims at investigating the toxic effects of hyperbaric oxygen (HBO2) on rat embryos. That female rats were on the first day of conception was accepted by confirming the presence of sperms in vaginal smears after overnight pairing of female and male rats. Pregnant rats were exposed to hyperbaric oxygen for 5 consecutive days (8-12 days of gestation). The control group was exposed to normabaric atmospheric air. On the 20th day of gestation day fetuses were removed by abdominal dissection. The measurements showed that the fetal body weight was decreased and the placental weight increased in the groups exposed to HBO2. The HBO2 treatment did not induce any embryonic abnormalities. There was a significant thickening interalveoler septum in lungs. These data suggest that HBO2 is not enough potent teratogenous agent to induce malformations and that embryotoxic effects could be improved in the postnatal period, or by using various antioxidant agents.
