Background: Lowback pain (LBP) is one of the most common complaints and one of the most frequent reason of application to outpatient clinics. This study investigates the distribution of application of LBP among patients who applied to the Neurosurgery (NS) and Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation (PMR)department. Material and Methods: Cases recorded with ICD codes M51.1 (Lumber and other intervertebral disc disorders, with Radiculopathy), M54.4 (Lumbago, with Sciatalgia) and M54.5 (LBP) in 2012 were selected. Number of admissions to NS and PMR, number of NS appliciants who underwent operation and the number of patients referred to NS for surgery were investigated. Results: Among 4517 patients (2159 males, 2358 females) 3122 applied to NS and 1395 to PMR. It was learnt that these patients had previously consulted to the same NS clinic for the several times (once, n=2773; twice, n=664; thrice, n=209) 1166 of While the same PMR was visited for the second (n=1166), third (n=335), and fourth (n=95) time. Two hundred and twenty-one patients who consulted to NS, and 10 patients who consulted to PMR were operated. A few (n=23) operated patients experienced sustained back pain and they were refered to PMR after surgery. Conclusion: Although a little number of patients are operated, majority of patients apply primarily to NS. Physiatrists should give important messages to society since they have a broader differential diagnosis perspective and treatment regimens.
