Özet

Inflammation and oxidative stress have been considered to play a major role in depression. Main contributors to the neurodegenerative processes in depression are pro-inflammatory cytokines, oxidative stress, hypercortisolemia, and neurotoxins. Imbalance between antioxidants and reactive oxygen/nitrogen species increases oxidative stress, which damages cellular proteins, lipids, and DNA. These oxidative damages result in aging, cognitive decline age-related disorders as well as depression. Thioredoxin (Trx) is an antioxidant protein and accounts for the majority of cellular redox balance. In addition, Trx is a good biomarker indicating oxidative stress in age-related and neurodegenerative diseases. However, there are limited studies on Trx levels in depression and the results are conflictive. Nevertheless, it is supposed that Trx may have an important role in depression because of its close relationship with oxidative stress, apoptosis, and inflammation pathways. Thus, there is a need for further studies to be conducted with Trx in the future.
