Özet

Objective: To asses the effects of smoking on the immunity of cervical epithelium. Study Design: This study was conducted on 60 patients between 1.5.1997 - 1.5.1998. We informed the patients about the study and questioned them for their smoking habits. Our study and control groups consisted of 30 smokers and 30 non-smokers. All 60 patients were between 20 and 30 years of age, none had a sexually transmitted disease. Cases were not oral contraceptive users and they were not menstrauating at the time of colposcopic examination at which we could identify the transformation zone. Pap smears as well as cervical punch biopries from transformation zone were obtained from every case for histological examination and langerhans cell count by immunohistochemistry. Results: According to the results of Pap smears, hystopathology and colposcopic examinations, there were no significant differences between study and control groups. However, the number of Langerhans cells were significantly lower among the smokers. Conclusion: The decrease in Langerhans cell number, produced by smoking may cause supression of local immunity of the cervix.
