Muzaffer Akdoğan and İlhan Aras The European Parliament’s Impact on the Future of the EU-Turkey Relations Introduction The European Commission and the European Parliament (EP) are the main determinants and guiding institutions in the relations of a candidate country with the European Union. The EP, the only ‘elected’ institution with a political character within the EU, plays a decisive role for a country wishing to step into becoming a member after candidateship. Understanding the role of the EP is essential for the EU, which is predicted to be in a different integration process in the coming years, and for Turkey, whose role within the EU in the future is uncertain. There is limited literature on the role of the EP in EU-Turkey relations. Aktan (1999) stated that the “Kurdish problem” was brought to the forefront among the parties in the relevant period. Aydogan (2012) has dealt with the outlook of the political groups in the EP towards Turkey during the period 1999-2011, and showed that certain political groups supported Turkey’s membership, while some opposed. Yuvaci (2013) took a survey of EP members made between 2006 and 2010 into account to examine how they viewed Turkey’s membership and concluded that the results were against Turkey’s membership in general.
