Özet
Trachoma is an overlooked tropical infectious ailment resulting from Chlamydia trachomatis strains A, B, and C. From a pathophysiological standpoint, trachoma constitutes a disease complex featuring two intertwined chronic processes: a recurring, generally mild infectious-inflammatory condition primarily affecting children, and a noncontagious, scarring affliction emerging later in life, ultimately leading to blindness. Typically prevalent in impoverished, rural communities in developing regions, particularly sub-Saharan Africa, trachoma has prompted the World Health Organization (WHO) to advocate for its control through a comprehensive approach that includes surgery, widespread antibiotic distribution, encouragement of facial cleanliness, and environmental enhancements. These combined interventions constitute the effective SAFE strategy, correlating with noteworthy reductions in the prevalence of active disease over the past two decades. Nevertheless, there remains a considerable population with trachoma still susceptible to the risk of blindness.
