Özet
Diabetes mellitus is a chronic metabolic disorder caused by interaction of genetics and environmental factors resulted high blood glucose levels. The global prevalence of diabetes is ascending, and the evidence suggests a positive relationship between diabetes and human exposure to phthalates. Phthalates are a group of plasticizers used for plastic material production. The epidemiological and experimental studies indicate that phthalate metabolites are associated with oxidative stress, loss of beta cells, impaired insulin secretion, disrupted insulin signaling pathway and altered glucose metabolism. Indeed, some phthalate metabolites were found to be associated with reduced insulin sensitivity, increased insulin resistance and inflammatory cytokines. There is limited research indicating that maternal phthalate exposure might be a risk factor for glucose intolerance and gestational diabetes. Moreover, prenatal and/or lactational exposure to phthalate metabolites might cause high blood glucose levels with reduced insulin levels, reduction in pancreatic beta cell mass and epigenetic changes in genes related to beta cell development in offspring. Thus, phthalates can be a potential risk factor to promote diabetes mellitus. Further prospective and experimental studies are needed to confirm this potential mode of action implicating phthalates in the rising rates of diabetes.
