Assessment by the Turkish version of the Iowa Infant Feeding Attitude Scale in pediatrics polyclinic

BACKGROUND: The aim of this study is to demonstrate the validity and reliability of the Iowa Infant Feeding Attitude Scale developed by De La Mora in Turkish and to ensure the use of Turkish mothers among their mothers. METHODS: 209 mothers who applied to Saglik Bilimleri University, Izmir Tepecik Training & Research Hospital and who have child under 5 years old were randomly selected and carried out a survey. The Iowa Infant Feeding Attitude Scale (IIFAS) were carried out to mothers who participating. The factor analysis and correlation of all items were determined. The validity of the scale was calculated by the Cronbach’s alpha coefficient. Statistical analysis was performed with SPSS16 and AMOS20 programs. RESULTS: The average age of the mothers were found as 30.2±5.48 (standard deviation). The mothers of whom applied to the pediatric outpatient departments, 42% of mothers were primary school, 24.9% of were secondary school and 8.6% were high school or college graduated. 85.2% of the mothers were unemployed. The factor structure of IIFAS was revealed by varimax rotation. The Kaiser-Meyer-Olkin sampling adequacy coefficient was found to 0.646. The Bartlett test for sphericity was significant (511, P<0.001). The item-total item coefficient (rit) was found to be 0.347. The Cronbach’s alpha coefficient was calculated to determine the validity of the scale. Cronbach’s alpha coefficient was found to be 0.506 by removing the 8th and 17th items from the scale. After removal of these items, the Cronbach’s alpha coefficient was found to be 0.61. In the second level confirmatory factor analysis, χ2 / df value was found as 2.1. This value indicates that the validity criterion is sufficient. In addition, goodness of fit index, GFI was obtained 0.91, root mean square error approximation, RMSEA was 0.067, the comparative fit index, CFIwas 0.81, and the adjusted goodness of fit index was 0.87. CONCLUSIONS: The Cronbach’s alpha coefficients for IIFAS in various countries range between from 0.46 to 0.86. This result shows that IIFAS has different results among different cultures. This validity and reliability study indicates that IIFAS has acceptable validity and moderate reliability level.
