Özet
The effectiveness and safety of mupirocin, rifampin and ampicillin-sulbactam treatment in the eradication of basal carriage of Staphylococcus aureus was investigated. Subjects were healthy hospital staff who had positive cultures of the anterior nares for S. aureus. Although antimicrobial susceptibilities showed that rifampin was highly susceptible (95.6%) to S. aureus, mupirocin eliminated 100% of S. aureus at early follow-up, and during the follow-up period recolonization occurred (16.6%). Less than in the other treatment groups. Adverse effects were mostly seen in the mupirocin group, but these were mild and tolerable effects. There were no statistically significant differences regarding adverse effects between the three groups. Mupirocin ointment applied intranasally twice for 5 days was tolerable and found as the most effective drug of these three antibiotics in eliminating S. aureus nasal carriage.
