Özet
It is well known that hormone replacement therapy (HRT) reduces the risk of cardiovascular system disease, osteoporosis, and dementia in post- menopausal women. However data related with the effects of HRT to insulin resistance are controversial. Thus, in this study we aimed to determine the effects of HRT on insulin resistance by using hyperinsulinemic euglisemic clemb technique that is known to be the most reliable method for assessing peripheral insulin sensitivity. 15 postmenopausal women are treated with 0.625 mg/day conjugated estrogen and 5 mg/day medroxiprogesterone asetate. At the end of the third month insulin sensitivity was significantly improved as represented by a 28% (p<0.001) increase in M value and a 33% (p<0.022) decrease in serum insulin levels. Lipid indices were also improved [low density lipoprotein levels lowered by 12.9% (p<0.044), high density lipoprotein levels increased by 17% (p<0.009), and total cholesterol levels lowered 9.1% (p<0.016)]. No significant alterations in serum glucose, C- peptide, and triglisent levels were noted. We conclude that HRT leads to hyperinsulinemic and improved insulin sensitivity in postmenopausal women.
