The Bibliometric Analysis of 75 Most Cited Articles on Brazilian Butt Lift

Background: Brazilian butt lift (BBL) is a surgical technique that sculpts the body by relocating fat from the abdomen, hips, or thighs to the buttocks. Despite having high potential risks, the procedure has gained immense popularity not just among patients but also surgeons. Scientific studies, with a high evidence level for BBL are also scarce. Identifying impactful scientific studies is typically achieved through citation analysis. This study aimed to fill this gap by analyzing the most cited BBL articles. Methods: The Thomson Reuters Web of Science citation indexing service was queried using the following keywords: 'autolog fat grafting,' 'bbl,' 'body contouring,' 'Brazilian butt lift,' 'butt lift,' 'buttock augmentation,' 'buttock enhancement,' 'gluteal augmentation,' 'gluteal fat grafting,' 'gluteal lipofilling,' 'gluteal lipoinjection,' and 'gluteoplasty.' Finally, the 75 most cited articles in the literature were selected and further analyzed. Results: Seventy-five articles were ranked accordingly. Of these articles, most were published between 2010 and 2019; 96% were authored by plastic, reconstructive, and esthetic surgery specialists; 43 were multicenter studies; 54 were clinical studies; 26 were published in the Journal of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery; and most represented studies were conducted in the United States, that is 38, and only 9 in Brazil. Conclusions: Despite the worldwide popularity of the BBL surgery, studies on this procedure, particularly randomized controlled studies with high evidence value, are limited. Scientific studies with a high level of evidence for this procedure should be included in the literature.
