Özet
Objective: The aim of this study was to investigate the relationship of vitiligo with insulin resistance and metabolic syndrome (MetS). Material and Methods: Forty vitiligo patients and 23 age- and gender-matched healthy controls were included in this prospective, observational case-control study. Fasting blood glucose, insulin, C-peptide levels and lipid profiles were quantified. Insulin resistance was calculated with the homeostatis model assessment insulin resistance (HOMA-IR) method. Body mass index, waist circumference and systolic-diastolic blood pressure measurements of the participants were recorded. MetS diagnosis was established according to the revised criteria of National Cholesterol Education Program Adult Treatment Panel III. Results: Serum insulin level was higher in vitiligo patients than the control group (p=0.09); however there was no difference in terms of insulin resistance between vitiligo (27.5%) and control (21.7%) groups (p=0.61). MetS was detected in 30% of the vitiligo patients and 26.1% of the controls (p=0.74). No significant association was detected between MetS and gender, vitiligo type, duration and distribution of disease. Elevation of triglyceride levels were present in 35% of the vitiligo patients and 13% of the controls (p=0.059); whereas no difference was detected between two groups in terms of other parameters of MetS. Conclusion: Although, remarkably higher serum insulin levels and more frequent elevation of triglyceride levels were detected in vitiligo patients in our study, the differences from control group were not significant. Moreover, no significant increase was determined in the prevalence of insulin resistance or MetS in vitiligo patients.
