Nutrition is a crucial component to achieve favorable outcomes in neurointensive care patients, as it is in all critically ill individuals. Conditions like traumatic brain injury, spinal cord injury, and acute hemorrhagic and non-hemorrhagic stroke induce alterations in metabolism and necessitate adjustments in nutritional requirements. There is a high likelihood that the digestive system in this patient group will be affected, resulting from both the acute stress response and the critical illness, and such impacts could extend to affect neurological control. The management of nutritional issues and other digestive system problems are pivotal in enhancing outcomes for this population. This section is focused on exploring nutritional strategies and gastrointestinal issues from a neurointensivist's perspective.
